How to choose, in four questions

    1. Do you need day-to-day cover? If GP visits, dentistry and optometry come out of your pocket today, a hospital-only plan will keep doing that. Compare the hospital-only plans against day-to-day options.
    2. Which hospitals do you want? Network plans are cheaper because they limit you to a hospital list. Check your hospital in the hospital network checker before you commit.
    3. Do you claim chronic medicine? Every scheme covers the 27 Chronic Disease List conditions; the number above 27 differs by plan. Search yours in the chronic conditions finder.
    4. What can you actually afford every month? Use the calculator to filter the full 2026 range by household and budget.

    Medical aid questions, answered

Which medical aid scheme is the best in South Africa?

There is no single best scheme — it depends on your budget, whether you need day-to-day benefits, which hospitals you want access to, and which chronic medicines you claim. This page ranks schemes on measurable criteria (contribution levels, chronic condition counts, published solvency) so you can match a scheme to your own situation.

What does the solvency ratio tell me?

The solvency ratio is a scheme's accumulated reserves expressed as a percentage of gross annual contributions. The Medical Schemes Act requires open schemes to hold at least 25%. A higher ratio means a bigger financial buffer.

How many chronic conditions must a medical aid cover?

Every registered medical scheme must cover the 27 chronic conditions on the Chronic Disease List as Prescribed Minimum Benefits. Many plans voluntarily cover more.

How often do medical aid contributions change?

Schemes publish new contribution tables each year, normally effective 1 January, after filing them with the Council for Medical Schemes. All figures on this page are 2026 published contributions.

Contributions are the schemes' published 2026 figures and can change. Scheme financial metrics come from the source documents linked on each card. This page is general information, not financial or medical advice.
