How Fedhealth structures its hospital cover

Fedhealth is a medical scheme registered under the Medical Schemes Act 131 of 1998, so every option here funds authorised in-hospital treatment and the Prescribed Minimum Benefits, including the Chronic Disease List conditions. What separates the options is price, which hospitals you may use, and what you pay out of pocket when you are admitted.

Of the 13 Fedhealth hospital options in our 2026 data set, 8 let you use any private hospital and 5 are restricted to a hospital network. Network options are cheaper for that reason; use a hospital off the list and you can carry a large share of the account yourself. 4 options publish a fixed co-payment for every admission.

Contributions are billed per beneficiary. A main member pays the main rate, each adult dependant the adult rate, and each child the child rate — so your monthly cost depends on who you cover, not on a single family price.

Before you choose a Fedhealth hospital plan

    Check the hospital list first

On a network option, the hospital nearest you matters more than the monthly price. Look your hospital up before you commit.

    Fedhealth hospital plans: common questions

How much is a Fedhealth hospital plan per month in 2026?

On the published 2026 contributions, Fedhealth hospital options start at R1 155 a month for a main member and run up to R6 620. Each adult and child dependant adds its own rate on top, because schemes bill per beneficiary rather than per household.

Which hospitals can I use on a Fedhealth hospital plan?

8 of the 13 Fedhealth hospital options in our 2026 data set allow any private hospital, and 5 restrict you to a defined hospital network. The network name for each option is listed in the table on this page, and you can look up individual hospitals in our network checker.

Does a Fedhealth hospital plan cover chronic medicine?

Yes, at least to the extent the law requires: every registered option must fund the conditions on the Chronic Disease List as part of the Prescribed Minimum Benefits. The most chronic conditions published on a Fedhealth hospital option for 2026 in our data set is 44. Chronic cover is usually subject to a formulary and a designated pharmacy.

Are there co-payments on Fedhealth hospital plans?

4 of the 13 Fedhealth hospital options publish a fixed co-payment per admission for 2026; the amounts are in the table above. Separate co-payments can apply to MRI and CT scans and to specific procedures — check the option's benefit schedule.
